Springtime for moviegoers in North Texas means more than just the crack of the baseball bat or the bloom of the bluebonnets. These months also bring the return of the region’s largest film festival, the Dallas International Film Festival. Coming after Sundance, Toronto, and South by Southwest, it’s often the place where DFW residents first get the chance to see some of the films that earned headlines at those earlier festivals.

This year’s event, running from March 30 to April 9 at various Dallas venues, promises to be no exception. Here are 15 projects worth investigating.

I'm not sure this festival has lived up to the hype of the first three years as an AFI affiliate, but I think taking a more localized approach will pay off in the end.

The 10th annual Dallas International Film Festival, hosted by the Dallas Film Society, celebrates films and their impact on society and will run April 14 - 24, 2016.

A 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, the Dallas Film Society celebrates and honors filmmakers for their achievements in enhancing the creative community, provides educational programs to students to develop a better understanding of the role of film in today's world, and promotes the City of Dallas and its commitment to the art of filmmaking.

The Festival completed a successful 2015 run in April with 168 films, more than 163 screenings and attendance of over 33,000.

I'm starting to think an AFI affiliation might now benefit the Dallas Film Festival. First and foremost, the screenings have to be vital, but the setting and staging of events is an important element for any festival. The affiliation was an excellent kick-start, but the city scene was just not in good enough shape to serve as a backdrop. The downtown area scene is still immature, but has grown so much I think the star power and connections of the AFI would settle nicely.

Either way, moving the Dallas Festival to the beginning of May will probably benefit by distance from the more prominent SXSW Film Festival in March. Also beneficial would be a cooperative with other Springtime events in Dallas such as Dallas Art Fair, Earth Day, and Cinco de Mayo.
