TxDOT rolls out $1.5 billion LBJ East project as legislators decide how to pay the bill

Written by
Ray Leszcynski

The Texas Department of Transportation is rolling out a public preview to the $1.5 billion LBJ East project even as state legislators are wide apart on where some of the money will come from. The 11.2-mile stretch of Interstate 635 between Central Expressway and Interstate 30 is TxDOT's top priority for the region. It will bring more lanes and continuous frontage roads to areas of Lake Highlands, Far East Dallas, Garland and Mesquite where tens of thousands of vehicles are slowed daily.

Great Frontage roads- Just what we need more of. If they are going to build frontage roads they should not allow businesses to open onto them... Businesses should have to open onto side roads... otherwise they will just slow down the traffic and we get no benefit from the road. along with a lot of other negatives of frontage roads.

The entire purpose of frontage roads is to locate businesses on them. About a decade ago TxDOT floated a proposal to let them build more highways without them. The legislature quickly quashed that idea -- they were inundated with calls from small town and county politicians throughout the state convinced that they had to have frontage roads or their burg was doomed.

Toll Lanes Planned for LBJ Between US 75 and I-30
Ten-year project would expand I-635, cost nearly $2 billion

By Ben Russell, NBCDFW.com, 11-06-17

A plan to expand a nearly 11-mile stretch of Interstate 635 between the interchanges with US 75 Central Expressway and Interstate 30 would include the installation of managed toll lanes for the entirety of the route.

The North Central Texas Council of Governments and the Texas Department of Transportation have long planned an expansion of LBJ Freeway east of the High Five interchange. Managed toll lanes had previously been planned for only a portion of the project.

There may be a compromise yet, after many twists and turns. Now TxDOT says the project can move forward if there are no new tolled lanes.

The squabbles and hand-wringing look to be over on this one. Construction contract will be awarded next year, with completion in 2024. Yes, commuters, 5 years of fun and detours.....
