Looks like Kessler Pies came and went without serving a single slice. It was always meant as a 3 month pop up. The space was won in a contest. They were open. With a hotel and 6 or 7 restaraunts in the district, it would be nice if everything were connected with some walkable streetscape. Don’t they want people to stay at the hotel because it’s an easy walk to the offices and restaurants?

Brewed + Pressed— coming soon.

Cinépolis says they are open—no marquis, movie posters, spotlights, Flying Elvi or other splashy stuff one might expect from a movie theater grand opening.

Since downtown Austin is bounded by the river and the capital, this concentration of residential seems to reflect the natural geography of the situation, not better planning.

The lofts have different owners than the tower and the article indicates separate financing as well. Most of the buildings in the DD are controlled by one entity, Dunhill. They may intend to develop every building themselves, so development could be very slow. Compare this to what 42 did in DE. Far less to walk to here than at the competing hotels—new Kimpton in DE, Zaza in Uptown, Joule or Statler in EMC. Even the W is getting a lot of new attractions in VP. I like the unconventional offerings. That is what it will take to get the Uptownees to brave a trip across Field St. to come here.

That said, I hope we see a few more conventional offerings for the residents and the AAC crowd. I’d like to see Snuffer’s, Torchy Taco and Flying Fish to name a few.

My neighborhood whined and whined about a Wal-Mart going in and people put up “Stop Wal-Mart” signs. Wal-Mart built a nice store that fit the neighborhood, everybody shops there and the whiners are forgotten.

Yes—it seems there are now enough residents and traffic to support retail here, but there is no space on offer. So I think these spaces should do quite well.

With most if not all of the demo & abatement completed, the building could go on the market tomorrow and it would be a steal for the next buyer. All of the hard work has likely been done. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the plan all along. The next owner would also inherit the deal with Tho...
